Japan PM pays respects to fallen in Darwin

Australia

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has laid a wreath at the Darwin Cenotaph overlooking the city’s harbour 77 years after Japan’s military bombed it.

Australian PM Scott Morrison laid the wreath with Mr Abe, who is the first Japanese prime minister to visit Darwin since the Northern Territory capital was bombed in 1942 during World War II.

The Darwin Cenotaph overlooks the harbour where an estimated 242 Japanese aircraft attacked Darwin, killing about 240 people.
